Don’t Use Tape on a Finished Concrete Floor

  • polished concrete floor

Whatever you do please don’t protect your finished floor by taping RAM board to the surface. There is the risk that the tape will either damage the floor or be very hard to remove.

We offer many different surface finished from polished concrete through to cementitious or epoxy coatings. We alway advise our clients to protect the finished floor while other Trades are finishing by laying down Ram Board and taping the sheets together. Do no tape it to the floor. The board will stay in position and be just as effective.

The problem is that modern tapes just aren’t what they used to be. Some tape will stick to the floor and be impossible to remove without resorting to scrapers and chemicals. Other tapes will chemically bond to the sealer and remove it or discolor it when removed. This can leave an ugly tape stain that will be impossible to remove. This is often caused by the plasticizers in the glue migrate into the surface of the concrete or coating.

I recently received a call from a prominent national company that had filmed a commercial in a stunning home in Westport. They film crew had taken Masonite boards to the polished concrete floor to protect it during the shoot. A few days later they revived the tape revealing light patched where the adhesive had reacted and removed the polish and stain. Nightmare!
