Polished concrete flooring is an exciting option for industrial, commercial, and residential applications. It offers the strength and versatility of concrete, along with the beauty of natural stone, such as marble or granite. Concrete can be polished and transformed into a beautiful floor that is durable, abrasion-resistant, and easy to maintain. Polished concrete flooring is the fastest-growing sector of the decorative concrete industry.

The Concrete Polishing Process

The concrete floor resurfacing process begins by grinding the floor with special metal and diamond tools fitted to a large grinding machine, starting with coarse 40-grit tooling. The top surface of the concrete is removed to expose the aggregate present within the concrete slab. This process smooths the floor, while also removing contaminants, such as oil, grease, and dirt. Successively finer diamond grinding tools are then used to create the desired level of smoothness and shine. Finally, the surface is coated with a topical sealant to provide stain resistance and create a durable, attractive surface.

The Benefits of Polished Concrete Floors

  • Cost Effective – While polishing a concrete floor is labor-intensive, the material costs are minimal. This makes it a competitive alternative to almost any other flooring solution in terms of cost.
  • Long-Lasting – A properly cared for polished concrete floor will last much longer than wood, carpet, vinyl tile, and many epoxy systems. Concrete is often referred to as a “100-year flooring solution” because of its longevity and durability.
  • Unique – One of the attractions of polished concrete flooring is that it is a totally unique flooring solution. We don’t know what the finished concrete floor will look like until we start to grind off the top surface to expose the aggregate.
  • Personalized – There are many ways that we can personalize your polished concrete floor. The surface can be colored using several water-based reactive dyes. We can also cut designs into the floor and then apply color and grout to create stunning visual effects. Decorative saw cuts, inlays, and logos are all options with polished concrete floors. We can also customize the surface treatment for the desired level of shine and gloss.
  • Durable and Easy to Maintain – When a carpet, tile, or epoxy floor begins to show its age, it must be removed and replaced. When a polished concrete floor begins to lose its shine, however, all it usually takes to restore the floor to its original beauty is a quick scrub and a fresh application of the topical sealant.
  • Harder Wearing – During the finishing process, we coat the concrete surface with a densifier, a chemical that reacts with the residual calcium hydroxide to produce calcium silicate hydrate. This process results in a denser, harder concrete surface.
  • Breathable – Many concrete flooring solutions can fail if any moisture escapes through the slab. However, polished concrete flooring is porous, which allows moisture to pass through the floor, essentially making it a breathable surface.
  • Environmentally Friendly – LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a program developed by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). It is a set of guidelines to help building owners and design teams determine and achieve green project goals. Polished concrete flooring utilizes existing concrete surfaces, eliminating the need for additional materials, such as coverings and coatings, and contributing to sustainable building. In addition, polished concrete floors typically contain no noticeable VOCs, making them compatible with any USGBC LEED building project.
  • Energy Savings – Polished concrete flooring can increase ambient light reflection by up to 100 percent. This means greater visibility, increased safety, less need for overhead lighting, and lower energy costs.
  • Safety – The static co-efficient of friction (SCOF) is a number that safety professionals use to measure the degree of slip resistance a floor exhibits, as measured from a resting position. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) set a guideline of 0.50 SCOF or higher for polished surfaces. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends a 0.50 SCOF for flat surfaces. Polished concrete floors typically have a SCOF exceeding 0.50, making them a safe flooring system choice.

A polished concrete floor can provide an attractive and durable option for your home’s living area, basement, or garage, or for your store, office, showroom, factory, or other commercial setting.
