Looking for Unique Countertops? Consider Polished Concrete

So you’re redoing the kitchen, and you’d really like granite countertops, but no matter how you stretch it, the budget simply won’t accommodate it. Sound familiar? Kitchens are the center of the home. We spend a lot of time there. For this reason, we like it to reflect our personalities and our family’s preferences. The countertops are a prominent feature that can make or break a kitchen design. So are you doomed to buying inexpensive Formica from Home Depot? Not when polished concrete is available.

What Is Polished Concrete?

Polished concrete is concrete that has been processed through a series of mechanically ground polishing and grinding” steps with progressively finer tools for each step. Next, it’s treated with a densifier/hardener that penetrates the concrete and creates a chemical reaction to help harden the surface for durability. Finally, dyes are applied to add color to polished concrete as well as other options such as patterns and designs.

Unlike traditional countertop materials, you can color, polish, stamp, and stain concrete. You can even embed objects in it to add to the design appeal.

The result is a shiny, decorative surface that rivals granite or marble for attractiveness and design cache. Because polishing is a multi-step process, homeowners can choose the level of sheen from stain to high-gloss that meets their maintenance and aesthetic requirements. It’s also possible to produce a terrazzo look by grinding through the top few millimeters of the concrete surface to expose the aggregate.

Isn’t a Concrete Countertop a Bit Odd?

Not at all. It’s as durable as more traditional and expensive materials, and is just as attractive (and more modern, if that’s the look you’re after). At Elite Concrete Systems, we offer complete, full service, bespoke, custom fabrication of concrete countertops as well as other residential features like sinks, wall tiles, and hearths.

Is It Durable?

Polished concrete counters are considered low-maintenance, as they are more durable and easier to clean than many other counter options. They’re also “green” and won’t chip or dent.
